And the first seeds of discontent are sown...

I'm a moron, so I don't get to go to the next LARP. On the request off calendar, I somehow managed to ask off for entirely the wrong day. (I got it, too. I have such a nice, accomodating boss.) The real day of the LARP, another manager asked off in August or so.Counting me, there are five managers in J-ville. Every day, three of them need to be scheduled. Those of you who can do grade school math are probably confused. It's really quite simple. One of the managers doesn't do weekends. Ever. Apparently, she was hired as an associate. She said then, "No nights, no weekends." (This is when the sane hiring manager says, "No job." You just can't DO that in a restaurant. Shitty hours are part of the deal in food service. But sometimes you really need the day staff, so you stretch a point and hire someone for weekdays only.) This happened in the first month the J-ville store was open. Almost immediately after she was hired, one of the managers got a better offer/ caught on fire/ was abducted by aliens/ or whatever. She was a really good associate, so she was offered a manager spot. She said, "No nights, no weekends." The GM said "No problem." Under the circumstances, what else could he do? (Answer: He could have dealt with a month or two of suck, and waited for the right candidate.) So now she's been an AM for eight years. She's been offered the salary several times, but always turned it down. RM's don't get to play prima donna no weekends bullshit. Don't get me wrong. She seems like a nice person, and she's a great opening manager. (Mr. J, in contrast, is not. I've been the mid for a few of his weekend opens, and it's funny, walking around the restaurant and seeing all the little things he forgot. He's not a morning person. This endears him to me, but it makes for some interesting lunches.) It just frustrates me, knowing that other people can work in restaurants and still have normal social lives. It would never even occur to me to ask for it.
