George, meet Musa.
2005-06-12 12:38 p.m.

So, I'm getting another cat tomorrow. Dave and Alys reached the point where they had to decide whether to keep the cat or the new baby, and, well, they made their choice.

(It's perhaps not the choice I would have made, but that's a story for another time. I like kids. I love toddlers. Babies freak me the hell out.

(If I see one, I'll go, "Ooh! Baby! Coochiecoo, and et cetera!" and say nice things to the parents because that's what you're supposed to do, but please don't ask me to hold it. I really have no interest at all in interacting with someone who has nothing to bring to the conversation besides gurgling.

("Oh, look! Baby's watching the colors!" That's just great. Have Baby give me a call when it figures out how to use the phone.

(But I digress. I don't expect to have to decide between a cat or a baby anytime soon, so I choose the cat. CatS. Plural.)

I'm a little worried about how George is going to react. He's met two other cats in his whole life, and he didn't like either of them.

In the Nekoosa apartment one day, I heard a cat in the hallway. George wasn't immediately present, so I opened the door to investigate, and this cat just walked in. George rematerialized, and started hissing. I threw him in the bedroom, picked up the intruder, and carried him out. His owner was just opening his apartment door, so I explained the situation and returned the cat.

The second cat George met was at the vet's office. The vet had two cats who roamed the waiting room, and one of them came over to say hi. George reacted badly, but he was of course already under a lot of stress.

The apartment cat was six years ago. George has mellowed A LOT since then. Maybe he'll be OK with this.

The Internet says you have to introduce new cats to each other gradually. Start them out in seperate rooms, with seperate food dishes and litterboxes for a few days, so they can get used to each other's scents before a face to face introduction. That seems like excellent advice, but I have a very small apartment.

I just talked to Alys' mom's voicemail. I asked her if she had an extra litterbox. I have off all day tomorrow, so I'm hoping I can pick up Musa then, and spend the whole day playing stressed kitty psychologist. I really hope this works out.
