Spring fever and too many books, again
2004-04-19 9:15 a.m.

It is quite possibly a little cold to be sitting around in just a towel.

This time of year is so annoying, in some ways. I know for a fact that from say, 11:30 till about 3:45 it's going to be just gorgeous out. Then, I'll rush home from work and put on something sleeveless, and the temperature will drop 40 degrees.

Last week, I took the Big Step, and turned off the furnace and opened up a few windows. I think I've mentioned it in here before, but this is an old house, and once the windows are open, it's really easiest to leave them open till September. This means that the apartment isn't uncomfortably warm at 4pm, but I always wake up freezing.

Stupid Spring Fever. When will I learn?

I worked at the bookstore yesterday, and I read a lot. I started reading Bridget Jones' Diary just because I'd always meant to get around to it, but it just annoyed me. She was freaking out because she weighs 129 pounds, and it's the end of the world. I outweigh her by 20 pounds. I tried convincing myself that I also probably have at least six inches on her, but my heart wasn't really in it. I don't need fictional characters making me feel large and ungainly.

So, then I read Candyfreak instead. (I must have liked it more. No link for you, Bridget!) Really, a hilarious book. The author is obsessed with candy, and spent months visiting candy factories. He says things like, "As Dave shoved the sample in my mouth, my only thought was 'Me love you long time'!" or wonders what would really happen if he stuck a finger, or an arm, into the big vat o caramel while the tour guide wasn't looking. I imagined sitting around with Steve Almond, gorging ourselves on peanut M&M's, and laughing at Bridget Jones, and I felt better.

Then, I came home, and read some more. It's all KC's fault. About a week ago, she shoved the first Otherland book into my hands. I read it, and enjoyed it, and asked her for the next one. She said she didn't have it. So, I went to the library to get it, but of course, I can't get out of a library with just one book. Dammit, KC!

I was going to tell you all about what I got, and how I'm liking it so far, but I need to get ready for work.
