Budget? What's that? and Ana's Literary Corner
2000-08-22 18:36:53

Lot of small stuff bouncing around my head...

I just read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I'd wanted to read it forever. I'm glad I finally did. I love the idea of kipple.

I've realized that I went around my recent book orgy all wrong. So far, all the books I actually bought have turned out to be high to midrange OK. I want to keep almost all of the library books forever though. Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates. Marabou Stork Nightmares. Wildlife. That Milan Kundera whose title escapes me. And now, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Dammit.

Maybe when the remains of my 401K arrive, I'll just go on a massive Amazon spree. Um, after I take care of the car, of course. Oh, and after I buy D. a PlaystationII. Dammit!

See, I keep looking at the budget, and seeing that we should have extra money. The budget calls for $200 of D's weekly check, and it's usually closer to $300. The budget calls for $100 of my tips each week. I make easily twice that. Somehow, though, we don't have enough money. We're paying the bills, and even having a little extra. But it doesn't seem like enough extra.

It's aggravating, because I know that if we ever get things stabilized, all will be good. The trouble is, I'm starting to think they show no real sign of stabilizing. This is now the third week in a row that I've said, OK, next week we can begin the regularly scheduled budget.

But things keep coming up. They're not even big things. We can handle them, but they're so damn inconvenient. My tire blew out Friday. D. is a fucking idiot who calls 900-numbers. (I got them blocked on our local bill. For reasons not entirely clear to me, $60 more showed up on the long distance bill. I'm not even entirely sure why I have a separate long distance bill, but that is neither here nor there.) My license renewal is due. I'm taking my grandma out to lunch this week.

None of these are a big deal. It's just that they all hit right when I was feeling proud of myself for having an extra $100. When you suddenly need $200, a bonus $100 actually kind of sucks. Oh, I'm sorry. For a few minutes there, I thought I was through feeling poor for a little while. I don't know what I was thinking...

Feh. Gotta get ready for work.
